Located 9 miles from the nation’s capital, the University of Maryland (UMD), whose mascot is the Terrapin and whose athletic teams are called The Terps, was founded in 1856 as the Maryland Agricultural College, and is one of America’s original land-grant institutions. UMD holds membership in the Association of American Universities, the Big Ten Conference and the Coalition for College, and is recognized as one of the preeminent public research universities in the United States. The faculty includes Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, members of the national academies and numerous Fulbright scholars. UMD is known for high level research, entrepreneurship and innovation.
To strengthen a core value of diversity, UMD hosts an Accessibility Hub providing resources and information to campus disabled. The Accessibility Hub works to build a strong campus community of people with disabilities, change “structural, attitudinal and institutional barriers that hinder equal access to university-sponsored programs and activities, and value “all persons with disabilities as integral members of our campus community. The following services are offered: Accessibility and Disability Service, Adaptive Technology Lab, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, American Sign Language Interpreters, Honor society for students with disabilities, Student Advisory Board, Counseling Center, Health Center, Mental Health Service.
Start your tour of UMD at the Visitor Center located in Turner Hall where you will be welcomed, can pick up a campus map and/or organize a tour. You will find four accessible parking spots out front. LOT C, an additional parking lot next door has seven additional accessible parking spots. The front entrance offers curb cuts in the sidewalk plus ramps and push button accessible doors. Accessible washrooms are available.
Mckeldin Library, the largest library on campus, offers two push button power doors up front. There are two rear entrances, however, they are not power accessible doors. There is one accessible parking spot to the exact rear of the library and thirteen accessible spots directly next to the library, which are shared with other buildings. The library offers both PCs and Macs for student use, plus research assistance, space for lectures, group discussions and private room usage.
Stamp Student Center–Adele H. Stamp Student Union
There are five accessible parking spots to the front of the student center, and five to the rear.
Front entrance is Accessible via Side Ramp, with push button Front Doors.
Two floors of food service are available. Dining options in student center: Panda Express, McDonalds, Sbarro, Saladworks, Chick-fil-A.
Student area, first floor. Accessible washrooms available throughout. Department of Sorority and Fraternity Life is located in this building, as is the Center for Student and Engagement and Financial Resources (CSEF) where students can arrange appointments to consult.
There is a University Book store in the student center. School clothing is sold there along with books.
A small market, called the Union Shop, is also offered on the lower level, along a with an ATM further down the hall. A UPS store is also found in the lower section.
Edward St John, Learning and Teaching Center.
Newly built, this building offers push button power accessible front and side doors. The lower section is accessible via a ramp. There is a cafe offered in the lower section, along with an indoor ramp. Elevators are used throughout the building. There are four accessible parking spots to the rear of the building, conveniently located next to a rear accessible entrance.
The University Health Center provides high quality, reasonable cost wellness programs, health care, and planned parenthood services to promote well being and support academic success.
Ellicott Dining
This dining area, is quite large and spread out and offers many varieties of cafeteria food, plus
push button accessible fronts doors. There are also accessible washrooms, though they do not provide power accessible entrances. There are six accessible parking spots behind Ellicott Dining.
In addition to Ellicott there are multiple food options available on campus.
Ellicott Hall, a building with many floors, is a residence facility directly in front of Ellicott Dining. This building is power accessible from the rear via elevator, and offers a front ramp entrance with push button power doors. It is part of a residence community including Hagerstown and La Plata Halls. The community office is located on the first floor of La Plata Hall.
Geary F. Epperly Recreation Center
Seven accessible parking spots are available out in front of the building’s push button accessible front entrance. The Rec Center has an Olympic size pool offering accessibility throughout. There are designated sections as viewing areas available for someone using a wheel chair. The pool offers an accessible lift and there are parallel bars for use by someone entering or exiting the pool. This building has three floors. On the top floor are a track, a weight room and two gyms. Eight squash courts are located here. An outdoor pool is also available with an accessible lift. Elevators, connect all of the floors.
The recreational area also offers a small cafe. The facilities offer complete accessibility.
There are eight tennis courts, behind Eppley Recreational Center, known, as Eppley Tennis Courts
Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium Football
At the west end of the stadium is a parking garage, known as Stadium Drive Garage with ten accessible parking spots on the first level. Elevators are offered connecting the floors.
There are accessible washrooms on both sides of the stadium. The stadium is accessible at the upper tier, from the road. Ramps are available to access upper tiers.
Shipley Field / Baseball
The field is accessible via ramp and offers designated accessible upper tier seating which offers exceptional viewing from all angles of the stadium.
Arts and Humanities
The arts are alive and thriving at UMD. Through the College of Arts and Humanities, undergrad programs are offered in Theatre, Film Studies, Music, Dance, Art, Art History, and Archaeology. Graduate programs – often to Ph.D. level are available in Art, Creative Writing, Dance Music and Theatre. Adding immensely to expanded artistic experiences are The Phillips Collection, The Stamp Gallery, plus several other admirable art galleries, and the Center for Art and Knowledge.
In the area of languages Ph.D. opportunities are available in English, German, French, Spanish, Translation, and Linguistics. A Ph.D. is offered in 2nd Language Acquisition.
At last count, Ph.Ds. are also offered in History, Women’s Studies, Philosophy, French Language and Literature, Music, Theatre, Communication, American Studies, Art History and Archaeology, English, Germanic Studies, and Music.
